The first week was slow. The second week was a little less slow. By the third week, word had moved through the neighborhood the way word moves in tight communities — quickly, personally, with the particular authority of someone saying she has the real stuff.
By the end of the first year, she had turned a profit. Small, fragile, nothing to retire on — but real.
The Block, Eventually
What happened over the next three decades didn't happen in a straight line. There was a lease dispute in 1989 that nearly ended everything. A flood in 1994 that destroyed two months of inventory. By 2021, Marisol Fuentes owned three properties on Harrisburg Boulevard, including the building that houses the original La Despensa. The landlord who made her sign that personal guarantee in 1984 had long since sold his holdings and moved to Arizona. Marisol stayed.
What Resilience Actually Looks Like
People use the word resilience like it's a personality trait — something you either have or you don't, something that makes hard things easier. That's not quite right.
Resilience, in Marisol's version of it, looked like getting up at four-thirty in the morning to receive a delivery because she couldn't afford to pay someone else to do it. It looked like sitting in a government office for three hours to contest a zoning decision, in a second language, with a dictionary in her bag.
